{"id":1547,"date":"2023-03-27T02:15:51","date_gmt":"2023-03-27T02:15:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/melybarragan.com\/portfolio\/?p=1547"},"modified":"2023-05-27T03:28:50","modified_gmt":"2023-05-27T03:28:50","slug":"family-legacy-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/melybarragan.com\/portfolio\/family-legacy-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"FAMILY LEGACY,  2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>FAMILY LEGACY 2023 shown at THE CHEECH MARIN CENTER FOR CHICANO ART AND CULTURE , THE RIVERSIDE ART MUSEUM.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><i>By appropriating one of my <span class=\"il\">families<\/span> most treasured documents, my late\u00a0 grandfather\u2019s Bracero ID card, and transferring it\u2019s image onto a white silk flag attached to a brass pole, floating like a ghost; I am symbolizing a piece offering between an extinct culture from a long gone generation with the progress and evolution of their current descendants.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><i>It has taken me most of my life to understand that the patriarchy was imposed on me and my <span class=\"il\">family<\/span> by the culture we come from, and it takes individuals like me to undo that <span class=\"il\">heritage<\/span>. Personally, I realized this after the passing of my grandmother, a strong Mexican woman that suffered the struggles of being left alone with her 12 children when my abuelo traveled north.
